Towards the end of the world of Eldrim's existence, a wise Queen built the biggest library in the world. To maintain it and fill it, she created the role of "Rynmir" or "Gatherers". With her blessing and protection, they went out across the world, recording myths, tales, history, lineages, geography, songs, poems, and everything else that was deemed knowledge. They returned to the Great Library and filed their findings away for the rest of the world to benefit. Through them, much knowledge that would have been lost to the grave, was saved. The first, and most notable of the Rynmir is Eirlys who fought against the Queen in a great battle, but then changed her ways and helped start the library.
I have always been obsessed with the idea of librarians, historians, and those, like the Brothers Grimm, that collected tales from around the world. As I created my world, I wrote essays under the names of these Rynmir (and yes, I was nerdy enough they all had their own voice and writing style). Then, last year, I learned of the Fili of Ireland. The Fili were a sect of druids that recorded events. They were bards, historians, judges, and poets. Even after the spread of Christianity, these Fili continued their role, mostly oral, of passing down folklore and learning. There's a lot more history behind the Fili that I intend to research and add to the Rynmir lore to make them more dimensional and believable.
I believe gathering history is so important. History should be remembered, because once forgotten, it is quickly repeated. Folklore and myths are also important, especially to writers, because they are filled with rich ideas, vital building blocks and inspiration for writing epic books. Its also just a lot of fun to incoporate history and myths from the around the world into what I write, giving them a unique spin. I could go on and on about this subject.
